On Monday, January 25th, 2016, the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) will conduct its annual Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE) count as part of an ongoing effort to address our chronic street homeless population. This initiative, along with the daily street outreach efforts completed by our teams, are aimed at helping some of our most vulnerable New Yorkers in need. As our teams work tirelessly to help engage these individuals, our goal is to combat street homelessness across all five boroughs, one person at a time. This is a unique opportunity to volunteer and participate in an extraordinary citywide effort as we try to help these individuals and guide their journey home.
New York City’s street outreach operation has moved more than 6,700 chronically homeless individuals from the streets into housing since the program’s inception in 2007. With 24/7 outreach teams mobilized in all five boroughs, specialized housing set aside for the street homeless, and targeted funding to ensure that adequate resources reach the individuals most in need, New York City continues to be a national leader in investing in programs to serve people living on the street.
We are calling on YOU, our fellow New Yorkers, to help us canvass parks, subways, and other public spaces, to estimate the number of people who are chronically street homeless. Just one night of your time will help us collect vital information for our outreach teams to help homeless people move off the streets and into a more stable, safe environment as they set out on a path for a better life.
We need 3,000 volunteers and the participation of our fellow City colleagues is critical. I encourage those who have volunteered before to sign up again, and for first-time volunteers to experience how truly gratifying a night of HOPE can be. Employees interested in volunteering as surveyors should visit www.nyc.gov/hope to register. Volunteers assist from approximately 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. performing HOPE to help the City best project service needs and allocate resources for the street homeless population.
We hope you will consider dedicating your time to helping us in this very important initiative. Please feel free to contact our HOPE team with any questions at email@example.com.
